Media Outreach

Make the media your friend and partner with your Screen Out! campaign. Local media can help publicize your efforts and also garner public attention from local citizens on the issue of smoking in youth-rated movies.

Two main ways that you can involve the media in your efforts are through:

  • Press Releases and
  • Editorials/Op-Ed Pieces
Press Releases should be e-mailed and faxed to local television, radio and newspaper outlets approximately 24 hours prior to holding your event. Adapt this press release with your local information and personalize it to reflect your event. If possible, try to partner your press release with some phone calls or personal e-mails to media staff to ask them to cover your event.

Op-Ed and Editorials are a great way to be heard in your local communities. To date, over 8 op-ed pieces have been published by AMA Alliance members around the country. Sending op-ed letters when there is a pressing issue related to what you are writing about is a great way to get them published. Write an op-ed piece in conjunction with a major studio announcement, a national awareness day or when you hold an event in your local community. Use this general op-ed piece and personalize it to reflect your local community.

Here are some other ways to get involved in local media:

  1. Call a local radio station talk show and voice your opinion about smoking in youth-rated films.
  2. Write up a section in your Alliance Newsletter about the Screen Out! Campaign. Alert members to visit the website and sign the online petition
  3. Contact a local magazine in your city or state and pitch a story to them regarding Screen Out! and your Alliance's campaign
